Teaching is a Work of Heart

One of my favorite gifts we've given the boys' teachers over the years are these notepads and homemade ornaments. The ornaments are super simple to make and a heartfelt gift for some of our favorite people. Sharing the recipe and instructions below for anyone interested in doing this as a Valentine's Day gift for their teacher this year!

Salt Dough Recipe + Heart Ornament Instructions

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups flour | 1 cup salt | 3/4 cup water

CRAFT SUPPLIES: Red acrylic paint | Small paint brush | Skinny ribbon | 1 Straw

DIRECTIONS:

  • Set oven to 200 degrees
  • Mix flour and salt in stand mixer. Gradually add water.
  • Knead until smooth.
  • Roll out on lightly floured surface - 1/3" thick.
  • Use opening of cup or circle cookie cutter to cut shape.
  • Use straw to poke hole at the top.
  • Guide the kids fingers to make a v-shape/heart with their fingers tips - it's okay if they aren't perfect. Be sure not to close the hole when doing this.
  • Place baking sheet covered with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes
  • Once cool, using red acrylic paint and small paint brush, paint the finger prints to make a heart shape
  • Once dry, thread ribbon through and cut long enough for them to be able to tie a bow
